China Town Trip
Today was the big day! Our field trip to China Town was a great success. The students had a lot of fun learning about the Chinese culture, and enjoyed visiting the various markets, gift shops, and the Chinese garden. Thanks to all of our parent volunteers who helped make the day run smoothly. I'm sure you'll be hearing many stories tonight!
Here are some highlights from the students.
"It was fun to see the signs and the statue of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen." - Lindsay
"China Town is so different. It has different candy, food , and drinks." - Liam
"Going to the fish store was funny, because it looked like the fish were sleeping." - Miranda.

Boomwhacker Fun!
This term in music class, the students of 6B have been learning how to play boomwhackers. It has been very entertaining! We have learned the basic scale and are working on rhythm, singing, and games. Here are some thoughts from the students...
"It's super fun. I like learning the boomwhackers because they are not ordinary instruments." - Caleb
"It's interesting. Anyone can learn how to play, because it's easy." - Kevin
"I like playing on different things like my chair, arms, head, and feet. It's funny." - Miranda
"When you hit different parts of your body, it makes different sounds. It's cool." - Liam
As well, last Friday morning, we had an all grade 6 worship time. We managed to fit 63 grade 6 students into one classroom for about 20 minutes of singing. The students sounded amazing! What an enthusiastic group of singers! It was a blessing to hear them sing praises to our God!

Monday Math
On Mondays, the students get a good dose of math with two math blocks scheduled before lunch. Today we enjoyed playing the Fun Factor Game. I will send home a copy of the 100s chart so you can challenge your students to a match. It's not as easy as it first appears! Our high score for the day was a huge 650 points scored by Reagan. Great work!
We also spent some time on a math practice website called IXL.com. This website is a great resource for reinforcing the concepts we are learning in class. Students are allowed to complete 20 questions for free each day. Please encourage your child to take a few minutes to try this at home. It is a great resource and the students enjoy it. I will include the reccommended questions in the weekly reminders below.

Caught You Reading!
This morning, the students got to settle in and enjoy reading a great book. Each Friday morning the whole school participates in thirty-five minutes of School Wide Silent Reading. I have enjoyed discovering which books the students are interested in, and I am developing quite the list of books that I "must" read! So what's popular in 6B today?
- Animal Ark - Lord of the Rings - Bone - Diary of a Wimpy Kid
- 39 Clues - Big Nate - Redwall - Warriors
- Cat Found - Fire World - Main Street - Anne of Green Gables
Favorite Authors...
- Deborah Ellis
- Andrew Clements

Blessed to be a Blessing
Today, 21 very excited students from 6B went off campus for their first service afternoon of the school year. Students volunteered making school kits at the MCC Warehouse, sorting food at the Food Bank, and visiting with seniors at Menno Home and Tabor Court. This is a photo of one of our groups outside of Menno Home today. I accompanied this group this week, and it was a blessing to see them interact with the residents. They learned a lot about the facility and had the opportunity to meet and visit with various residents during a jazz concert. They also helped escort residents to and from the program. It was wonderful to see the joy on their faces after an afternoon helping others. The students really enjoyed the time, and I heard comments like, "That was so fun!" and "I hope I get to see the same resident again next time!" In three weeks, we will be visiting Menno home again, and this time the students will have a little more responsibility as they help with the activities. The boys can't wait to help with bowling! Thank you also to all of the parents who provided transportation and supervision. What a great way to spend the afternoon!

Learning About Lockers
Hello Parents,
Today in 6B, we started our theme class with a lesson all about topic sentences. The students practiced writing various topic sentences and then chose one to develop into a paragraph. I thought this example was a fun reminder of the challenges that come with the first weeks of middle school. Enjoy!
"This is how you open your lock without screaming!" Do you remember screaming at your locker? Well, you don't have to any more. Here's a step by step guide so you don't scream. Step one. Turn your locker lock clockwise. Step two. Turn it counter-clockwise. (Go past the number once.) Step three. Turn it clockwise again, but don't go past it. If it doesn't open, now you can scream. Step four. Get the key from a teacher." - Written by Steven.

Welcome to 6B!
Parents and students,
Welcome to grade 6 and 6B! I am delighted to have the opportunity to work alongside each of you this year. Our theme for the year is Know the Truth, Live the Truth based on John 3:21. "But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God." It is my desire that each of us will grow in our knowledge of God's truth and that we will with God's grace live it out in our every day lives. What a blessing to know that God is a part of our classroom, and that He desires what is best for each of us.
It has been a fun week getting to know all of the students in 6B, and I can already tell that it will be an exciting year! What a talented and friendly bunch of students! I ask for your continued prayer for our class that we would encourage and build each other up as we learn and grow together.
