Fractured Fairytales

On Tuesday afternoon, the students had an opportunity to read their fractured fairytales in small groups.  The students spent a fair amount of time writing their scripts, and it was very entertaining to hear them read with drama and enthusiasm.  The students will be working in small groups to present their fairytales at our Presentation of Learning night coming up in January.  Here is a sneak peek of some of the titles.

"Joe and the Radio Tower"
"Pimplestinkskin"
"Jack and the Candy Cane"
"Hairyella"

"We wrote fractured fairy tales which was a chance to use our great imaginations.
We shared with each other, and learned that some of our classmates are
very dramatic." - Chloe K.

Exploring Extreme Environments

Over the past two weeks, we have begun our unit titled Exploring Extreme Environments.  It is amazing how creatures and people are able to survive under such extreme conditions.

Some thoughts from the students...

"It its interesting how there is acid in caves" - Matthea

"I like learning about extreme environments because it is cool to see all the cool things that are in these environments.  Like it is freezing in the Arctic, and in the caves it is really dark and there are a lot of creatures in there like bats and glow worms." - Caleb

"I wonder how people are able to live in Anarctica because it is freezing cold there." - Liam

"You can turn urine into water in a process (part of a life support system) and the water will be totally clean.  They use this in spaceships to save water." - Emily

Christmas is in the Air!

This week, the students of 6B have begun adding their flair to our classroom.  We have a small Christmas tree set up and a whole variety of ornaments are slowly being added.  There will also be a classroom door decorating contest soming up, and our class has decided on the theme of Christmas in the Jungle.  I'm sure a whole lot of "wild" items will be making their way onto our classroom door.

A Busy Week...

Well, it has been a busy and fun week here in 6B.  We enjoyed some time skating on Wednesday followed by a special concert with The Wiebes.  Then this morning the students participated in our Grade 6 Christmas Music Chapel.  I was so proud of their "wacky" performance.  They showed a lot of courage and confidence while playing their boomwhackers for everyone.  This afternoon, we are going to enjoy a bit of quiet time and watch a Planet Earth movie that explores caves as part of our Extreme Environments unit.

A few quotes...

"The Wiebes have amazing talent.  Also, they were funny." - Kevin
"I liked the concert because Shane Wiebe is an amazing singer.  I got to see him again after two years.  He used to live on my street." - Liam

The Cultural Fair

I am finally getting around to postng a few pictures of the Cultural Fair last week.  It was a huge success!  I was so proud of all of the students.  They worked hard on their displays, and it showed!  I enjoyed listening to each of their presentations and hearing what they have learned over the last few months.  It was a blessing to hear so many of them make comments regarding God's love for all cultures, and the need for us to respect everyone.  Of course we also enjoyed all of the delicious food from around the globe!  Thank you to all the friends and family who visited.  Also, thank you parents for helping your children to prepare for this special day.  It was a fantastic afternoon!

Please check out the weekly reminders.  It is going to be a busy week in 6B!

Off to the VSO

We had a wonderful time listening to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra today!  It was great to see the students dressed in their finest ready to attend this formal concert.  I have attended several of the VSO school concert series performances, and this was one of the best!  The students enjoyed the grand ambiance of The Orpheum theatre.  "I feel like I'm in Hollywood." one student said while walking down the carpeted stairway.  Highlights were the crystal chandelier, painted ceiling, and plush red seats.  The theme for this year's concert was Wall to Wall Percussion and featured a wide variety of percussion instruments including the kitchen sink!  The performance featured a variety of pieces including Sabre Dance, 1812 Overture, Mission: Impossible and Star Wars: Main Title.  It was a fantastic concert in a beautiful setting!

This afternoon, the students in 6B enjoyed some time working on the visuals for the upcoming Cultural Fair.  Some of the projects include scrapbook pages, placemats, and economic pictographs.  This is an activity that the students have really been excited about, and it was wonderful to see some of them arrive at school this morning loaded with extra supplies to add that little extra flair to their project.  Hope you can join us for the Cultural Fair!

Keeping Active

Running the Property Run

Having a Break
On Wednesday morning, we enjoyed a PE class outside in spite of the dreary weather.  The students started off by running the School Property Run and then playing a game of Blob.  They all came back inside with rosy cheeks and smiling faces.

"The people who are IT need to work together as a team.  When more people were IT, it was harder to run across." - Beth

"It was lots of fun until I got tagged.  When I was tagged, I was in the middle and people were pulling me in both directions.  It would have been easier if we were all heading the same direction." - Steven

"During the School Property Run, at first I was going pretty fast until I got a sore leg.  Also, when I passed some of my friends, I would jump up and say 'checkpoint'." - Emily

Yesterday was a cozy, cuddly day in 6B.

"I think it was fun having pajama day because all the people were wearing pajamas.  It was comfortable having pillows and stuffies." - Kevin

"I brought a pillow pet, a toy husky, and wore my pajamas.  It's too bad the we didn't get to watch all of the cartoons in the gym because it wasn't working.  It was still fun." - Megan

A Visit from Egypt

This morning, we had the opportunity to enjoy another featured speaker.  Our guests this morning were Nathan Still (Mr. Still's son) and his friend Miriam.  Nathan is working at a school in Egypt, and Miriam is an Egyptian citizen.  The students enjoyed listening to Nathan and Miriam tell about life in Egypt.  They gave us glimpses into Egyptian culture by showing us Egyptian currency, fabric, an alabaster vase, and even a musical instrument.  The students had many great questions and even learned a few Arabic words, or at least we tried.  The students were intrigued to learn that sand clouds can actually make the sky dark and cloudy, and that in Egypt it only rains a couple of times in the year!  We hope to have more featured speakers visit us soon!

Bowling and Bingo

On Wednesday,  I accompanied the students who are volunteering at the Menno Home.  This week the students were helping the seniors participate in the recreational activities.  Two groups of students spent the hour playing Bingo and one group helped out with bowling.  Once again, I was encouraged to see the students encouraging and visiting with the residents.  A highlight for me was watching the bowling group cheer on the residents, particularly when one of them got two strikes!

"I played Bingo with the people from Menno home, and I helped someone find the numbers when they couldn't find it.  I think it was fun." - Lindsay

"It was really cool how they put the ball on a stand, and then rolled it down.  It was really fun setting up the bowling pins.  Most of the people got strikes and some got spares.  They have good aim." - Andrew J.

A Visit from Nicaragua

This morning, we gathered all of the grade 6 students into Ms. Van Geest's classroom to hear from our first featured speaker.  As part of our culture unit, we are hoping to have visits from several people who have lived in or visited another country.  Our guest speaker today was Ms. van der Woerd.  Many of you may know that Ms. van der Woerd was a grade six teacher at our school for the past several years.  She is currently teaching at a school in Managua, Nicaragua.  She visited our classroom via Skype and shared the Nicaraguan culture with our students.  Many of the students had the opportunity to ask questions.  Here are some samples.

"How old do you need to be to get a driver's license in Nicaragua?"
"What kind of art do you have?"
"What is your favourite Nicaraguan food?"

The students really enjoyed learning in this way, and even got to say hello to a few of the students from the school in Managua.

"It was very interesting to hear about Nicaragua.  You have to be 18 to be able to drive." - Steven

"I've never seen Nicaragua before and it was cool to learn about.  Most poor countries don't have fresh water, but this country has fresh water that comes in bottles." - Liam

"I think it's cool that Ms. van der Woerd is teaching PE there.  It was kind of neat that we got to see the kids there too." - Beth

A Wet (but fun) Wednesday

The Bear Creek Christian Schools Cross Country meet was held yesterday in Surrey.  There were four members of 6B who ran, and they all did so well!  In all we had 26 middle school students take part in the event.  Although the weather was cold and rainy, the students had a fun day enjoying time with their friends and participating at the meet.

While we were gone, the remainder of 6B enjoyed a fun day with their friends in 6A and 6C.  They moved into Mrs. Bakker's and Ms. Van Geest's classrooms for the day.  One highlight was working in groups to create a recipe for Canadian culture complete with ingredients and directions.  The students also enjoyed a scavenger hunt in the library.

Using our Wits

This morning, 6B participated in the third anti-bullying session with Mr. Stahl. Mr. Stahl continued to encourage the students to create a positive classroom and school environment.  He gave students this tool to use as a reminder of what to do when bullying happens.

W - Walk Away
I - Ignore
T - Tell Someone
S - Seek Help

We have also continued to add rings to our classroom Chain of Belonging.  Here are just a few of the comments that were added today.

"Someone helped me when I got hurt."
"I helped someone with their math homework."
"I showed someone how to make a bookmark."
"I saw people encourage."
"I played with someone who was left out."

It is exciting to watch our Chain of Belonging grow!

The students in 6B have caught factor tree fever!  They have been completing a different factor tree each night for a week.  Every math class, there is a sea of hands greeting me as many students are eager to share their solutions on the white board.  As many of my suggestions are now "too easy", today's challenge is 1005.  We'll see who is ready to share the solution tomorrow!

Guest Speaker Mr. Stahl

Today, our middle school counselor, Mr. Stahl visited each of the grade 6 classes.  He began with the first of three talks to promote a positive environment in our classrooms and school.  His theme was how to prevent and stop bullying.  He focused on the physical, social, and emotional requirements that are needed to make our school a great place to be.  He then outlined how people feel when these necessities are taken away from them.

"Mr. Stahl put up signs that were sad, angry, and scared.  Then we chose how we would feel if we  ripped our shirt.  He was talking about the different emotions we would feel if something happened to us." - Beth

"I liked the part when we went to the posters.  I learned that you could feel all three emotions for different things that happened." - Emily

"I learned that everyone has different feelings about the same experience like sad, scared, and angry."  - Liam

As a class we will be creating a chain of belonging to hang in our classroom.  This will be a reminder of ways we can encourage each other.

6B Sing Along

A future singing sensation...
Last week, the students enjoyed some time to sing in our classroom.  Kevin brought in his guitar and we took a few minutes to sing praise songs together.  We have quite a musical class!  Many of them participated in our last Concert Day, and it was wonderful see their talents.  "I like that we can bring in whatever we are learning at home, and play different songs for the class." - Liam

The class was entertained through a number of vocal, piano, guitar, and drum performances.  I've really enjoyed getting to see the variety of gifts in our classroom!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Chicken Foot

A Game of Chicken Foot

Have you every played the game Chicken Foot?  It is a domino game that the students have been playing with the residents at Tabor Court.  Part of the game requires completing a "chicken foot" before moving on to the next stage.  This Tuesday, two of our students spent about an hour playing Chicken Foot with three delightful ladies who live at Tabor Court.  Meanwhile, the boys in our group helped organize a game of shuffleboard, which sounded quite exciting.  It was a variation of the game which included knocking down small bowling pins in an attempt to get strikes and spares.  I have really enjoyed participating in our Tuesday service afternoons, as this has been a wonderful opportunity to see the students volunteer joyfully!  I'm looking forward to visiting our other service locations soon!  Thanks again to all the parent volunteers who continue to make this possible.  It is greatly appreciated!

Cultural Artifacts can be Delicious...

Over the past two weeks, the students of 6B have been bringing in objects to represent their cultural heritage.  When one student requested to bring in traditional food, I said yes, not knowing that I was opening the door to a cultural picnic.  Over the next several days, the students enjoyed a variety of delicious artifacts inluding kimchi, chocolate, apple pie, shrimp crackers, and delicious pastries and cookies.

The class of course enjoyed the snacks, but also showed a keen interest in all of the artifacts brought in.  They took turns trying on wooden clogs, browsing through picture books of England and Scotland, and experimenting with chopsticks.  It was a highlight of the day, as the students were eager to learn from their classmates.  Thanks to all the parents for helping the students find an artifact to bring in.  The variety and planning was wonderful, and helped make these presentations a great success!

Also, remember that there is no school on Thursday, Friday, and Monday.  I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend as you spend time with family and friends.  We have so much to be thankful for!
